On Holiday in Heaven

2018

On Holiday in Heaven was the first piece of theatre I designed myself. Having next to total control in developing the lighting and sound for the piece. By working closely with the director, I developed a design concept that was congruous with the script and implemented it myself. This was my first real experience of implementing my tech knowledge into the actual theatrical world and it was a real challenge. I found the technology to be confusing and daunting and this resulted in a rushed product that potentially wasn’t as fleshed out as I would have liked it to be. I also received notes that my design was a far too bright. Actually going as far as to cause discomfort to the audience. In retrospect, I should have spent more time investigating the lighting board (a Jands Vista controlling Vista v2 software) so I was more efficient when it came to the limited tech time we had. However, the experience wasn’t all negative. Through practical learning I managed to make mistakes I know not to do nowadays. I was given a large amount of responsibility and trust from a director who valued my artistic opinion and presented me with ample opportunity to develop the aesthetic of the work using lighting and sound.
